A half dozen dark sleek warships of the Nangrar High Seas Navy sat in darkness just north of Kordalburg; indeed, the light from the city could be seen easily from the deck of each ship. The dim marker lanterns on each ship would probably not be visible from the backlit shoreline, though these points of light shone far into the darkness for anyone whose eyes had fully adapted to night vision.
An occasional set of white tufts from the oartips of the warships glimmered faintly in darkness whenever one ship would need to move to remain on its patrol station, perhaps a little silvery spray from the bow illuminated by the ship lanterns could be seen as well from a nearer distance. The ships communicated by code with lantern shutters, signalling each other from time to time, or by shouts through megaphones if they would draw near. But for the most part, they simply drifted, groaning and squeaking softly as the water rocked them, resting oars atop the waves, the officers and lookouts on deck watching and listening for any boat or ship which might be making an approach towards Kordalburg Harbour.
