Human

World of Storm and Fury: Guides: Character Races: Human
Humans are by far the most populous of the humanoid races of the World, as well as one of the shortest-lived. They have adequate physical strength, and typically adult males grow to heights of 5'8" to 6', while the females are usually shorter, averaging 5'0" to 5'6". Since their lifespans rarely exceed six decades, and often last for under three, the humans tend to produce many offspring within a pairing of male and female known as a 'family.' Humans seem to be able to adapt and prosper in virtually all climates of Oortesia, and are found in significant numbers everywhere except in the deep deserts, marshes, and the extremely cold reaches of the north.

The family is the basis for all human societies. The male human tends to wish to aggrandize his family posessions, and create a greater legacy to pass onto his children. In the poor members of human societies, this tends to mean building a bigger house, perhaps obtaining better lands on which to raise crops and livestock, or in the city, securing an apprenticeship or even education for his offspring. With wealthy families, the wish to leave a legacy turns to thoughts of dynasty, obtaining power and posessions to pass on to the sons, making a fine marriage for a daughter with the help of a large dowry.

The female, on the other hand, concentrates on scheming to obtain the best marriage possible, then working to nuture the children and prepare them for the time they become adults. In poor families, whatever education the children obtain will usually come from the mother, while in the wealthy families tutors and schools take on this function, leaving the mother more time to prepare her children for the social aspects of society.

These families then band together into larger organizations, clans, tribes, nations, essentially pursuing these same goals on a larger scale. It is generally the role of the male to protect and provide for the family, as such he will normally be a part of some organization which allies him with other men to achieve this goal. Such organizations are known variously as guilds, churches, houses.

Of course, there are many variations with respect to how the humans accomplish these goals. These variations in fact give rise to both the organization of many human societies, with division of labour and responsibility placed with different classes of the society. Indeed, it is these very divisions which both allow humans to create large nations, while at the same time creating inherent differences which inexorably lead to conflicts--fights, crimes, even wars. Thus, one goal of the nation and government is to impose law and order which minimizes and resolves these conflicts, while at the same time protecting the interests and families of the denizens.
